Rethymnon beaches

The Prefecture of Rethymnon encompasses splendid beaches with the most popular and organized found along its northern shore and more peaceful and pristine on its southern shore.

The most popular northern beaches are the beaches of Rethymnon and of Platanias both long golden sandy stretches, well organized and quite busy since they are near the capital. The beach of Missiria, is equally sandy, a well organized beach with crystal clear waters, the organized, sandy and blue-flag (E.U. top quality beach endorsement) beach of Koumbes, the organized Geropotamos beach with crystalline, deep waters and a shore mixture of pebbles and sand, the Panormos beach near the quaint homonymous village, sandy and fully-organized and the beach of Bali in the scenic village, consisting of several small beaches, some of which are pebbled and others with sand, but all with clear pale blue waters.

In the southern part of the prefecture is the peaceful and non organized beach of Rodakino near the small settlement of the same name. Several small beaches form the organized, and sandy Souda beach with lovely waters, the organized sandy beach of Triopetra with fabulous water, popular for its rocky scenery and the truly breathtaking sunset there is also the long-stretch of sandy beach which is Agios Pavlos with excellent green-blue waters and the Agia Galini beach which is also sandy and well-organized, found in the resort that bears the same name. The Preveli beach (or Finikas) was unquestionably the most exotic and popular of the prefecture, has by common agreement been demoted as a favourite. It was until recently embraced by a dense palm-tree forest which unfortunately and to our great dismay and sorrow was totally burned. It still has soft sand and azure crystalline waters while the mouth of the river Kourtaliotis is united with the sea forming a delightful lagoon.
